Isn't it clear so far that both John and Mary love each other and want their marriage to work and last and Sherlock has their back as well? I mean come ON, Mary was ready to go to any lengths not to lose him, then our John showed her he's on the same page by forgiving her and overlooking her past and Sherlock neatly squared it all off by taking care of the Magnesson problem and removing the looming danger from the Watson family. How much more blatant can it be??
one of the most FUCKING HEARTBREAKING things about trf is how well john understands sherlock. coaching him through the press conferences. that little moment in the entry way of 221 baker street before they go to moriarty’s trial. you can really see how sherlock depends on john to strengthen and steady him. and john just glows under that. he adores being important to sherlock. he loves being sherlock’s one-man inner circle. nothing in this life makes him as happy as looking after sherlock holmes, and sherlock holmes appreciating that.
when sherlock returns in s3, they haven’t just lost the time that they’ve been apart. john has lost faith that sherlock trusts and depends on him. he’s lost faith that he’s the most important person in sherlock’s life. he’s lost faith that he understands sherlock intimately and can take care of him. and he knows that sherlock will always be the person who knows him most intimately and is the most important person in his life. he wants so badly to mean as much to sherlock as sherlock means to him. he wants it so badly.
