It’s so painful comparing John and Molly because to the casual audience, Molly’s crush is so much more obvious. But to anyone who’s looking at the blogs/the characters in the show, you’ll see that Molly is actually pretty quiet about her feelings compared to John “#sherlocklives means #johnwatsonlives” Watson.

Consider the following examples of John doing the most:

  • Molly asks Sherlock if he wants coffee. John asks him if he’s single.
  • Molly dates a secretly nefarious IT guy for three days to try and move on. John marries a nurse/assassin.
  • Molly starts a blog and talks about her crush on Sherlock, but she lets it go after a few months. John blogs about Sherlock for years, even when he’s legally dead.
  • Molly uses her expertise as a doctor to help Sherlock on cases. John uses his expertise as an army doctor to save Sherlock’s life on multiple occassions.

John. Sweetie. Son. Child.

“Having a strong female character doesn’t mean she’s beyond suffering and fragility… That to me is strong writing for women.” - Tatiana Maslany (insp)

Something I’ve always adored about the women of Sherlock is that their strength is not defined by physicality. Irene isn’t necessarily strong because she is capable, neither is Mary, Mrs Hudson and Molly are not physically strong, yet you would never call any of these women weak. These women are strong because they feel fear and pain and face it with dignity regardless.
